I’m a technology person as well as a fitness person.  Obviously combining the two brings me great joy…most of the time.  When Beachbody On Demand first came out I was pretty underwhelmed by the technology and the offering itself.  Since then I have still continued to use it while also re-ripping all my DVD’s to host locally on my own PLEX media server for a number of reasons.  The most recent of which is the company’s seemingly inept ability to manage their technology.

Recent FireTV Update Breaks Beachbody On Demand App

The other day I went into the home gym to do a workout, fired up my FireTV and noticed it had done an update.  Cool, I decided to check it out later when I was done.  I went to launch the Beachbody on Demand App….waited…..waited….waited….nothing and eventually a screen saver.  As if nothing even loaded.  So I proceed into troubleshooting mode….mind you all I want to do is WORK OUT!  I uninstall the app, re-install, reboot the FireTV, check the connections, etc and after 30-45 minutes I give up and revert to the PLEX Media Server version of the workout.

Fast forward a day and I try again thinking maybe the service was down.  To my surprise it still does not work.  I go to another FireTV that also has been updated and I try again….same thing!  Now I am convinced it’s a Beachbody On Demand App issue with the new FireTV update, so I post this on the CEO’s FB Page.

To which he replied:

While I greatly appreciate the reply, it actually pissed me off even more and here is why.

Beachbody On Demand Team Completely Dropped The Ball

First off, there was NO outbound communication that there was an issue.  I searched the FAQ, asked Google, literally nothing to be found.  So the fact they were “aware that customers were having an issue” was even worse.  People are PAYING for this subscription service.

Secondly, the FireTV did not, and as best I can tell, DOES NOT give the option to “refrain from the update until we notify you”.  So since these devices just update, and they already have shown their inability to “Notify me”, yeah I have faith in that.

Lastly, here is the big rub putting my IT cap on.  There is NO REASON this ever should happen.  Amazon, Apple, Google, and pretty much every platform out there provide tools to people that write apps to test them with new OS releases.  In just about every case those new OS updates are made available to developers so that these things don’t happen.  So I am really not sure what Carl means by saying “we are working diligently with Amazon and our other partners to remedy the situation”.  You should have been WELL ahead of the new OS drop.  The best part is EVERY OTHER app continued to work fine including Les Mills On Demand which I also use that is a competing company.

So why is it this is the only app that died?  I believe it is the constant history of the company that spends more money and time on infomercials instead of supporting the things people are really using these days like on demand streaming, or I have said in the past, just having digital downloads so I can get the media files with my purchase and just host them myself on my laptop.  Will I stop being a fan of this company?  No, I like what they produce, but for Pete’s sake wake up, get your head out of the sand and stay ahead of things like this.  Heads should roll in your IT department for bricking an application on an entire platform rendering paying customer unable to use it.  Seriously.  I’ve yet to see any public update or notification and maybe I will try again today to see if it works.

Beachbody On Demand All Access

It was also just announced that on December 27th, you can purchase Beachbody On Demand All Access.  Great deal cost wise if you ask me, but if the service cannot be accessed what’s the point?  The company is a Marketing Machine, all I am saying is that if you want to play in the online, cloud world, you better get your service availability dialed in along with your application availability.  Two different things, and to date both are sub-par with this service.  Hey if you still want to give it a try, let me know I can get you setup with it and you can tell me how it works on your devices.  At least I call things like I seem them!

Many people who have been following me know that my only other hobby besides work is Health and Fitness.  About a month ago I started reaching out through Twitter and a new blog site, Virtual Fitness, to help others get fit if they wanted to change-up their routines.  The interesting thing I have found is that many people in the VMware community and IT space can relate to my story.  Many of us travel for a living, we eat out all the time, and generally we are just not healthy.  A few years ago I decided to turn all that around using P90X, and recently P90X2.  I decided I wanted to share and help others in our industry do the same because I know how hard it can be.  So I decided to become with is known as a Team Beachbody Coach.

The response has been great so far!  We have one group of folks from literally around the world, Tim Gleed is in Australia, working together to do Virtual Fitness.  We are already looking to get additional groups together, and there is even talk of some vFitness activities for VMworld with Wade Holmes and a few others.  I did want to thank all those that have been jumping in from around the Virtualization community and the world.  It has made me feel like I am making a difference in people’s live’s above and beyond the technical expertise I bring to the community.  It is really cool to be able to take my own hobby and passion and bring it to others.  I can also say these folks have kept me motivated to do my own workouts!

If there is anyone else out there that is interested in joining any of our challenge groups, please ping me on twitter or read more about the rules of a challenge here.  Most of the posts in our little FaceBook group have been really funny as well.  Guys seem to have a rough day of coding or dealing with work and have just been taking it out on some workouts.  I think many would be surprised to see the current folks challenging themselves from the community.  Some are pretty well-known in the blogosphere and Twitter space.  All I know is it’s pretty cool to hear these guys talk about how they are continuing to get better each week.

In all my current work I know it is crazy to think that I have time to maintain yet another blog site or venture.  However, in just over a week my wife will be leaving her job to do what she loves.  She will be focussing full time on her new business called Julie Ann’s Quilting & More.  Now one can deduce that website is also another one that I happen to manage and run for her.  That my friends is NOT the new site I am speaking of.  I am referring to yet ANOTHER new one that I am launching called Virtual Fitness.

The reason my wife starting her business is important, because it has taking me to a place where I realize what one of my real passions happens to be.  Her’s is sewing and creating things from nothing and now she gets to do nothing but that.  I love what I do for VMware and that will never change.  Next to my good friend Duncan Epping I have the coolest job in the company working for the Center of Excellence.  My passion outside of work however has become health and fitness.  Specifically the Beachbody programs of P90X and P90X2 most recently.  Beachbody offers a unique opportunity for people to become “coaches” to help others meet their fitness goals.  I decided a few weeks ago that some of my off time will be spent doing just that.  I wrote an initial article about it but now it is taking shape.

This new site will be dedicated to helping people I have connected with reach their fitness goals.  I have seen already on Twitter many conversations about people wanting to get fit.  In this new site you will find my story, some really bad before photos as well as current photos.  I already have about five ideas for blog articles about how I managed to keep the program going even while traveling.  What I would invite readers of my technology blog to do is visit the new site.  It’s lean and mean which simple content that will continue to grow each night over the next few weeks.  If you already have a Beachbody coach you can always request to be changed to me if you know me.  If you do not have a coach you can join my team with a free login then decide for yourself if you want to become a healthier you.

I’m very excited to move into this new little venture, of course it will not replace my day job, this is just my passion outside of work and I want to share it with as many people that I can who want to join the fun.  You only live one life, so you need to not forget to do the things you love.

If you bought the P90X workout or some other Beachbody program or nutritional product through Beachbody, than you already have a Beachbody Coach assigned to you and may not even know it. As a Beachbody customer you are automatically assigned to a Beachbody Coach when you resgister.  It is your right as a customer to switch to a different Beachbody Coach if you decide you would like to. Your assigned Coach may have never reached out to you, or maybe they’re not returning your emails or phone calls. Regardless of the reason, Beachbody allows customers to switch to a different Coach pretty easily.

To change your Beachbody Coach, simply send an email to Beachbody at customerservice@TeamBeachbody.com and let them know that you would like to switch Coaches.  Give them your full name and your account log-in name so they can pull your information up. Also, give them the name of the Coach you would like to switch to and their User ID. That’s it! In a few days you will be switched over to your new Coach.

Alternatively, you could call the Beachbody Coach Relations Department at 1-800-240-0913 and they can make the switch over the phone. I think most people find emailing Beachbody easier since when calling you may be put on hold until someone is available to talk with you (it really depends on the call volume).

Of course, if you would like to have me as your Coach 🙂 than when calling or emailing Beachbody give them the following information for me: Chris Colotti, User ID-145042 or CColotti. I would truly be honored to be your Coach and will do what it takes to help you reach your health and fitness goals!

Lastly, if you didn’t buy P90X, Insanity, or other Beachbody program or nutritional product through Beachbody’s website than you still can sign up for a free account and have me as your Coach. Simply click on the following link to create an account with me as your coach–> Free Beachbody Account.  If you would like to become a coach yourself you can also do so By Clicking Here.

If you would like to purchase any Beachbody Products it would be great if you could do it through my online store, even if you are not going to sign-up for a free account.
