Vmworld2016

Yesterday many people started getting their notifications about sessions that were approved and denied.  I submitted two sessions this year and of the two one was accepted.  I was pretty excited about the fact I have had a streak going of submissions and acceptances that I tweeted this out.

The really sad thing about it is that a number of people started replying about how it’s easier or at least there is the assumption that it’s easier to get sessions accepted as a VMware employee.  I was more than a little offended to say the least, but being a day later I wanted to properly address this assumption, at least from my personal perspective.

VMworld Submissions Are All Treated The Same

Regardless of what you THINK you know about the process, employees follow the exact same submission process as everyone else during the open Call For Papers.  We have to log into the same site, submit the same forms, and follow the same process.  There may be a different process for event sponsors, but that’s a completely different story since they are paying sponsors.  I am strictly referring to the call for papers.  Once I submit my session(s), it goes into the same review cycle as all the others.

The bottom line is there is no back door process, no special treatment or favors that happen, at least when I submit mine.  In fact each year for me it becomes harder to come up with something compelling to speak about and submit.  It’s why each year I submit fewer, and have fewer accepted.  I know people are going to believe whatever they want about the process, but for me I’ve never leveraged any internal connections.  Good ideas, good abstracts, and compelling topics are what get noticed.  That actually is the key, getting NOTICED in the sea of submissions.

Now, there may be people on the content side that recognize names on submissions, and maybe that does help, but then that means maybe you need to become a little more well-known in the community as well.  It’s not posturing, it’s making sure people know who you are and what your expertise are.

Tips To Make Your Abstract Better

  • Have a very compelling topic that is relevant to a large number of people, don’t make it laser focussed
  • Make sure people know who you are in the community
  • Make the title powerful, it’s the first thing people read.  There is a feeling that “Deep-Dive” in the title will always get it noticed…I don’t think that’s the case these days
  • Spend time on the abstract.  This is your pitch to the content people.  All you get is this to catch their attention.
  • Make sure you pick the best track you can.  Sometimes there is no great option, so pick the best.
  • Make the key take aways VERY clear, but CONCISE.  You can’t get wordy on those, make sure it’s as powerful as the title
  • Have someone review it that has been successful before.  To be honest, I’ve never once been asked to review an abstract….

On the Front Line: A VCDX Perspective working in VMware Global Support Services
How many people get the opportunity to ‘walk a mile in their colleague’s shoes’. This panel of four well-known VCDX’s had the opportunity to spend a month working in VMware Global Support Services (GSS), where they were involved in closing nearly 400 support requests. During this period valuable insight and feedback was shared with customers and GSS, and valuable lessons were learned all around.  The lessons learned during that month has been translated into discussions intended to help YOU our VMware customers.  Their perspectives, on what they observed from customers and the common themes of architectural design challenges was eye-opening.  Come and hear from those VCDX’s some of the most common issues they identified and the ways to mitigate.  Take advantage of their time on the Front Line with GSS to help you design better VMware solutions. During this session they will also unwrap the GSS processes to help you better understand them overall and clarify common misconceptions about GSS

It’s that time of year again, and what I mean by that is time for the shameless plugging of sessions.  I will have a few things going on this year at VMworld and for the first time I also helped support an Expert Led Workshop for vCloud Air-DR.  So that being said, below is all the things I will be working on so please do consider these sessions for your week.

Speaking Sessions:

  • How to Build a Hybrid Cloud – Steps to Extend Your Datacenter – HBC1533 8/25/14 (Monday) 3:30 PM Room 2002
  • How to Build a Hybrid Cloud – Steps to Extend Your Datacenter – HBC1533 8/27/14 (Wednesday) 10:00 AM Room 2006
  • Recovery as a Service (RaaS) with vCloud Air – HBC1534 8/26/14 (Tuesday) 5:30 PM Room 2016
  • Recovery as a Service (RaaS) with vCloud Air – HBC1534 8/28/14 (Thursday) 12:00 PM Room 2003
  • Disaster Recovery as a Service (and Cloud Networking) with Chris Colotti – HBC3450-GD 8/25/14 (Monday) 11:00 AM Marriott, Yerba Buena Level, Nob Hill A
  • Meet the Experts – 03 – MTE-03 8/14/14 (Monday) 1:00 PM Moscone West, Level 2, Meet the Experts Lounge

Updates:

The group discussion has been added to the catalog, but I think as always with the meet the experts you need to sign up in person.  Looks like Monday will be my day from hell for the most part.  Seeing as I get in on Sunday, should make for an interesting day!

vCloud Air-DR Workshop:

This is going to be A LOT of fun!  We do not have a Hands On Lab, BUT we do have an expert led workshop which will be using REAL production vCloud Air, not a vPOD for the DR aspect.  The On Premises will be a vPOD, so if you can get in or on the waiting list, you will have a lot of fun!  I will be there in person supporting this as time allows.

Yes, I am now pimping the VMworld 2014 Mobile Application for iOS and Android but there is a reason for it.  To be quick and simple, it’s actually hosted on VMware vCloud Air and was designed new for this year!

Yes that’s right, this year the entire mobile app was built new to support the conference with information, notifications, some fun things,  and yes, the surveys.  Ah, the all important surveys will need to be filled out AS ALWAYS and you can do them in the fancy new mobile application.  Just remember if you are in my sessions the highest score you can give it a 5 and the lowest score is a 5…..so just remember that.

So if you are attending VMworld 2014, go download the application today and see not only the great new application, but a real-time mobile application running on vCloud Air for the entire week of the conference.

As with previous years at VMworld, there will be group discussions and expert one on one sessions.  These have just been added to the content catalog so you might want to take a look at the ones available.  If you have not participated in these before, they are quite fun.  They are small rooms with up to 50 people and it’s basically an open discussion on the topic with the speaker.  The one on one time is your chance to get 15 minutes with a VMware expert and discuss topics in their wheelhouse.

The thing you have to remember is there is no official slide decks for these group discussion sessions.  You come with questions and use cases and we facilitate discussion around the topics.  They can be quite fun when people participate with the discussion, so if you have not seen the group discussion for me int h catalog here is the session you can enroll for.  The one on one session you need to setup on site at the event.

Well today is the start of Day Two of VMworld and its the first chance I have gotten to grab a few minutes and write some thoughts on the first day.  For me this is my 6th VMworld and I think my 5th as a speaker.  You tend to lose count after so many, but you don’t forget the things that got you here.  I wanted to take a minute out of the madness to truly thank all you, my many friends who support and attend the sessions I deliver.  Frankly without you and your support I would not constantly be asked to be here, or at your various VMUG’s.  I truly enjoy being stopped in the halls and asked questions and I will always stop to talk for as long as I can.  I ay not always know your name but I will try to learn just a little bit about you so we can become friends in the community.  So please keep that up and if you see me, be sure to holler my name and let’s get to know each other.  The bottom line is I would not be here if it was not for all of you, so with that I truly say I am humbled and thank you.

Okay, so what about the first couple days?  What are your thoughts so far about the announcements from Day One:

I’d love to hear more thoughts on the vCloud Air as you stop me in the halls and attend my sessions today and tomorrow on it.  Today is my Group Discussion and I am hoping to do a demo of the portal for people if they want.  The group discussion is pretty free form so if you are attending come with some things vCloud Air related to talk about.  You all know I love the whiteboard and we can take it wherever we want to go which is why I love those sessions.

Today my goal is to try to hook up with some vendors at the solution exchange and get my hands on some appliances I want to load into vCloud Air and play around with.  I also want to try to get some time with the VMworldTV folks so we can get some airtime on the vCloud Air offering.  Let’s see what Day two brings for interesting announcements.

I wanted to post something quickly about the sessions I am currently speaking at this year for VMworld in San Francisco.  I’m excited to be in all these, but I will say with the new role it will be a VERY busy week for me.  I hope to see may of you there!

PHC1005-GD Public Cloud with Chris Colotti Not Scheduled
PHC4750 How to Build a Hybrid Cloud in Less than a Day (With Dave Hill) Wednesday 11:00 AM
PHC4783 How To Build Your Hybrid Cloud and Consume the Public Cloud (With Mike Roy) Wednesday 8:00 AM
PHC5732 The Economics of vCloud: Which Cloud Do I Need? Monday 3:30 PM

Again this year you can see I have a Group Discussion which I may pull David Hill and/or Mike Roy into since the presentation I am doing with him and the other one I have on consuming the cloud are directly related.  We always have a lot of fun with those group discussions so I am always glad to do those smaller groups.  It looks like without any repeats thus far I will have some time to build my own schedule and see many of my friends present as well this year.  That never happens!

vCloud Air

I am working on helping with some of the VMware Hybrid Service VMworld content reviews and I learned there will be three hands on labs that directly deal with the offering.  The three labs are:

  • HOL-HBD-1301 – vCloud Air Jump Start for vSphere Admins
  • HOL-HBD-1302 – Advanced Networking and Security
  • HOL-HBD-1303 – Hybrid Cloud Management – Manage Your Cloud

If you are starting to investigate hybrid cloud and specifically the VMware vCloud Air you might want to get these on your “To Do” list.  I know the networking one is being worked on by my good friend Greg Herzog and he also has a couple breakout sessions.  If I myself have time I may even give the labs a try just to see how it feels from your seat.  It’s always different getting the perspective of the attendee than a speaker.

As we get closer to VMworld I know I will be involved a lot this year with things relating to vCloud Air both with sessions, and maybe expert and group discussions.  My co-worker Mike Roy will also be there along with a host of others where we will have lots of various demo pods at the booth.  I’m excited for this year even though it could be my busiest year ever.

So I finally got around to getting my VMworld 2013 session submitted based on my work a few weeks ago with the Hybrid Cloud setup I was working on between multiple public clouds.  I know voting is not opened yet, but I am hoping many of you will earmark this session for your list.  The details are below so you can read about it before the catalog goes live.

How To Build Your Hybrid Cloud and Consume the Public Cloud

VMworld 2013

Breakout Session

VMworld 2013 Session Abstract:

Are you a VMware vSphere Customer today that is on the verge of deciding to expand your current deployment or start considering vCloud Providers? Are you a start-up trying to decide how to consume the vCloud Provider public clouds as your Infrastructure as a Service, (Iaas)?  These are two very common use cases for customers looking to move to a Hybrid Cloud solution with VMware vCloud Providers.

This session will discuss the concepts for design of your Hybrid Cloud fully integrated into your existing vSphere and/or physical only infrastructure, or even your own private cloud. We will examine and explain some ideas in how you can better consume and expand your current datacenter capacity into one or more public cloud providers running VMware vCloud Director. You will leave the session with a better understanding of how to go out and start consuming the vCloud providers to best suit your needs to grow your capacity and connect them to your existing infrastructure. This session is ultimately about understanding how to consume the vCloud public cloud providers not building your own private cloud.

What will make this session unique is it will leverage live white boarding for the majority of the session instead of just PowerPoint slides.

  • Introductions
  • Understanding Public Providers
  • Use Cases for Consuming the Public Cloud
  • Designing Your Hybrid Cloud (Whiteboarding)
  • Q&A

Learning to design for expansion into the vCloud Public providers

Understanding the process to expand and consume the public cloud

Begin evaluating Public vCloud Providers and architecting your Hybrid cloud

Recently Veeam gave away some passes to Microsoft TechED, and now they are doing the same for VMworld.  You can actually enter into their drawing to win a free pass to the VMworld 2013 conference.  You might as well do it you never know, you could win and make it to VMworld on Veeam!  You just need to register and you are done.  Here is a few reasons why you want to get there!

VMworld Breakout Sessions

Breakout Sessions provide product, industry, and solution-specific presentations to the most current and prevailing issues. Every Session can be locked into your schedule during pre-registration, giving you the peace of mind that you will have a spot to learn about topics that matter most to you and your business. Most sessions are repeated at least once and additional sessions are added leading up to VMworld.

VMworld Knowledge Experts

Connect with subject-matter authorities through our Knowledge Experts program. These members of the VMware community conduct and participate in Breakout Sessions and Group Discussions throughout the conference.

VMworld Group Discussions

Led by Knowledge Experts, these informative and interactive discussion groups are a great opportunity for you to gain insight from like-minded colleagues in similar industries.

VMworld Hands-on Labs

Hands-on Labs (HOLs) provide a unique interactive learning environment designed around typical customer use-case and business scenarios. Conference attendees are literally “hands-on” with the technology, exercising workflows that relate to real-world issues.

VMworld 2012 Day 1 for me I knew was going to be the busiest day by far of all the days.  I had three speaking sessions along with the general hallway madness of drive by conversations.  Prior to VMworld Day 1 I made sure to take in a little time for myself just because I knew it was going to get crazy.

Most who know me or follow me know I don’t usually work out in the morning, but for the week of VMworld I knew this had to change so up at 6:00 and in the gym to get in my full Body Beast workout.  It was actually good to get going early so I knew I would not have to jam it in later.  I met Thomas Kraus down there and then it was time to head out to the General Session.

I hooked up with Rawlinson Rivera to head over to the VMworld General session and take in the announcement by Paul, Pat, and Steve. It was great to finally get some of this stuff out there as knowing it myself before hand is great but you cannot get the excitement of the real announcements.  As Paul handed off the reigns by giving himself “The Hook” on-screen I was a bit sad.  I actually wished we could have done more for that hand off to really thank Paul for all he has done.  As an employee here he has done great things for us and I can only hope that level of commitment to the customers and employees continues.

Then it was off to the first Session of the Day for VMworld VSP1168 with Duncan Epping, Rawlinson Rivera, and Aidan Dalgleish.  The session was great it was PACKED with over 800 people, standing room only.  A great way to start off the day and the week for all of us.  We took it right to the end of the time available, so we got all the information in and the twitter stream on the session seemed well received.

I had a break for lunch with good friend Vic Camacho under the food tent, then I needed to get a couple of things done back at the hotel before I headed to my Expert 1:1 sessions.  These are great, small groups on a couch talking about vCloud ideas.  I actually got a few take aways for me to ask Product Management about so that was very valuable to get that feedback from customers.

After that I had my Group Discussion with 50 people where we talked more about vCloud Service Levels, architecture, implementation, and anything else we could think of.  These are also great as thy are small groups of people talking to EACH OTHER, not just me presenting to them.  I am just the facilitator in these sessions for the participants.

Once that ended it was off to the VMworld Expert Reception, and finally we ended the night with Virtacore at their wine tasting.  The last stop was for a turkey sandwich at Mel’s Drive-in where we ran into Duncan and Frank one last time for the day and off to bed before Day 2 which will also be crazy…..just not as crazy.
